Computers have come a long way since the days of the Abacus, the ENIAC, EDVAC etc.Along with computers; computing needs have also undergone a huge transformation. About a decade and a half earlier people used to go Wow over the computers of those times. It was around that time that the PC evolved into its current form. Those were one of the earliest Personal Computers. But at the time the PC was a dream that no individual person or home could afford. The PC however made its entry into offices and it was increasingly being used for office purposes like writing out reports, financial statements etc.The computer was also being used as terminal systems for billing purposes, flight reservations etc.But it had still not made its entry into common homes.
Soon companies like IBM,Compaq started seeing a market in home PC’s and started developing PC’s for common home use.PC’s that did not burn a hole in the pocket started making their entry into the market. Even then, a family with a computer was accorded a higher status by society much like when the television made its entry into homes a couple of decades ago. People were astounded by the immense potential of home computers. The things that computers could do left them speechless!!!! The computer of that time could help in writing letters, could be used to hear popular songs, games could be played and what not!!
I still remember using a PC loaded with Windows 3.11,the latest OS of those times that had everyone drooling all over it. It had options like File Manager that provided easy access to data stored in the system. And guess what, it had inbuilt games also like Minesweeper, Cards etc.At the time I felt that there was nothing that could quite come near the convenience of the Windows 3.11.Some years later I was to be proved wrong with the launch of the Windows 95 Operating System by Microsoft. It was such a user-friendly version as compared to the Windows 3.11 OS.Unlike the older Windows all the facilities were provided at the click of the mouse.
Further developments in technology led to the launch of Windows 96/98/2000/NT/ME.As the OS’s became more and more sophisticated, hardware and software requirements also changed accordingly.
Then came the much-awaited launch of Microsoft Windows XP, by far the most user friendly OS with networking support.XP took the world by storm and even now reign supreme. It was XP that taught me what a User Friendly Interface meant. It definitely made computing a whole lot easier. Even the arrival of Windows Vista could not match the facilities of XP that is available at a nominal cost as compared to Vista and demanding a whole lot of resources less than Vista.XP can run smoothly even with only 128MB of RAM compared to Vista, which requires at least 1 GB RAM
Computer Hardware has also evolved to meet the challenges posed my high end OS’s.Years ago a configuration like a 40 GB Hard Disk and 128 MB of RAM would have been a luxury and would have cost a king’s ransom. However with the increasing popularity of entertainment(gaming,songs,movies etc) the optimum configuration for today’s computers would be a 160 GB Hard Disk,1 GB of RAM,DVD Burner,5.1 Channel audio system, a high end graphics card. Motherboards are being manufactured considering all these factors so that no compatibility issues arise.
And the greatest thing about this is that all this can be bought for around a fraction of the cost of the PC of yesteryears.
